Day 2, 0100. Jim’s condition continues to deteriorate. Hereceived little relief from the nebulizer therapy, dyspneicpositions, or the nurse’s coaching with his breathing exercises.The physician was notified, stat ABG’s were ordered with thefollowing results: pH 7.3, Oxygen 48, CO2 55, HCO3 30. Thephysician has asked the resident on call to incubate Jim and placehim on a mechanical ventilator. 1. Analyze these ABG’s. Whatacid-base problem exists? Why are COPD clients at risk for thisproblem? What are the indicators in these ABG’s that signify theneed for intubation?
