Problem 3 Carbon and Tin 9 (1+3+2+3) points The states of carbon and tin are considered in the following. Neglect the Coulomb-interactions between the electrons for all calculations. (a) What is the complete electron configuration of carbon in the ground state? How many valence electrons does carbon have? (b) One of the p-valence electrons in carbon is excited to the 3p-state. Determine the possible values of the total angular momentum J of the p-valence electrons. List the possible states in terms of the good quantum numbers (which are these and why?) and associate them to the spectral states 25+1 LJ. (c) Demonstrate that the configuration of the valence electrons for tin is comparable to the config- uration of carbon. How does the coupling of the angular momenta differ from the coupling in carbon? (d) A p-valence electron in tin is excited to the 6p-state. Determine the possible values of the total angular momentum J of the p-valence electrons. List the possible states in terms of the good quantum numbers (which are these and why?). Compare with the results for carbon from (b).
