Students are asked to conduct an investigation on the mixing of color. They have three flashlights, each covered with a piece of colored acetate (a transparent plastic). One flashlight is red, one is green, and one is blue. They shine the lights against a white background and observe that when the colors are mixed together, they see a white light. The students then hold a hand in front of the white background and switch on the lights one at a time. They record their observations for the color of the object and its shadow. They repeat this experiment with all three lights on and record the shadows they observe. Flashlights Red only Green only Blue only Red, green, and blue Observations Single black shadow Single black shadow Single black shadow Many shadows: portions of shadows are yellow, cyan, and magenta Which best explains the difference in the results obtained for the shadow colors will all three lights on? (DOK 2)
With a single light on the hand blocks out all light in that spot and the 1) shadow left behind is black. With all three lights on, shadows are secondary colors (yellow, cyan, and magenta) wherever two primary colors overlap and the third is blocked by the hand. 2) With a single light on the hand blocks out all light in that spot and the shadow left behind is black. With all 3 lights on the pigments within the flashlights separate to create the rainbow of colors seen in the shadows. 3) With a single light on, there is no way for colors to mix. The absence of color is black like the shadow. With all three lights on, shadows are multicolored because primary colors mix to create white light which represents all colors. 4) With a single light on, there is no way for colors to mix. The absence of color is black like the shadow. With all three lights on, shadows appear as secondary colors (yellow, cyan, and magenta) due to the angle and intensity of the three lights mixing.
Which of the following is NOT TRUE of plane mirror images? 1) They are erect. 2) They are the same size as the object. 3) They are virtual. 4) They form on the surface of the mirror.
