The present story is about China. It is a story of the refugees. Their villages were ruined in heavy floods. So they had to leave their villages for the capital city of China Long It was a winter evening. As endless line of refugees walked through the new capital city. They felt like strangers in their own country. Their own lands were
only a few hundred miles away from the city. They were simple peasants. They had سان
never seen a city before. The new things in the city did not attract them. Several thousands of refugees came to the capital. The city was full of them. They were given food, shelter and clothes in camps outside the city. More and more men, women and children were coming. They passed through the city while going to the camps. The people of the city hated them. They were afraid that there would be no food left for them. The shop-keepers shouted rudely at the refugees. The refugees began to earn some money by pulling rickshaws. Many died in cold winter nights. The local rickshaw-pullers cursed them as the refugee rickshaw pullers charged low fares.
They were no common people. They were farmers. They were driven out of their lands by floods. Their dress showed that they all belonged to the same place. Their clothes were old fashioned but cut in a fine way. Men and women were tall
and strong. They were not beggars by choice. They carried a load of two baskets across their shoulders. The baskets contained clothes and quilts. Upon the clothes were kept some cooking utensils. But there was no food in the baskets. The faces of the refugees showed that they had not cooked any food for days together. They were starving.
At the end of the procession of refugees was an old man. Even he carried a load of two baskets. One of the baskets did not have utensils. But the load was too heavy for the old man. He was feeling tired. He could not walk any more. He placed his load down. He began to take rest. He sank his bead between his knees and closed his eyes.
A poor noodle-seller sold noodles on the road-side. The light of his stall fell on the old man. A kind man passed that way. He was moved to see the old man. He had no spare money to give. Yet he could not bear the sight of the old man. His heart melted. He gave the old man a silver coin and a copper coin. He asked him to buy noodles from the hawker. The old man refused to accept the money. Describe the plight of the refugees. Why were the refugees not liked by local population?
