Marketing Goddess. That's what one of her first clients calledher. It's not the title Shari Worthington had in mind when shegraduated from St. Lawrence University with her bachelor's degreein biology and psychology. But as so often happens with collegegraduates, multiple careers awaited her.Worthington's first job out of school was in psychology. It didn'tpay much, so she added a part-time job as a file clerk in the salesdepartment of a computer company. She had no business training, buther boss saw that she had impressive communication skills. She wasmoved to telemarketing, where her training in biology andpsychology proved to be a perfect fit as she was selling toscientists and engineers. From there, it was on to productmanagement.Worthington's psychology background again became valuable, as shebegan managing online discussion groups to interact with customersand prospects. This provided tremendous insights that could then beapplied to new product launches.When the computer industry became a bit unstable, Worthingtonstarted a consulting business on a part-time basis. It didn't takelong before she realized that she was making more money in herpart-time venture than in her full-time job. And she found that sheliked being her own boss. Before she knew it, Worthington had fivedifferent businesses going at once.After a while, Worthington woke up to the fact that she had aspecialty: marketing to "techies." She landed a contract withApple, managing an association of scientists and engineers who usedApple products. She also worked on several in-house projects withApple's marketing team, including creating an "Apple in Science andEngineering" sales kit of materials. This enabled her toconcentrate on one business, Telesian Technology Inc., which hasnow been operating for over 25 years. According to the company'swebsite, Telesian Technology focuses "on developing innovativemarketing programs that support the sales effort, both online andoff, by generating qualified leads, increasing brand awareness, anddeveloping long-term customer relationships through high-impactpromotions programs."Telesian reaches out to clients and prospects in multiple ways.Worthington explains that print materials still are viewed as themost trusted source of information. Nevertheless, she has movedforward with blogs, podcasts, online newsletters, TED talks, andother means by which prospective clients can find her and existingclients can feel they are gaining added value.In Shari Worthington's words, "Marketing is a continuing series ofexperiments!"
