You are trying to determine whether participating in social activities ( measured by the number of hours per week ), such as volunteering , etc. , reduces depression ( measured the number of sad days per month ). But you forgot to control for the number of chronic health conditions , such as, cancer , heart diseases , arthritis , etc. That is, number of health conditions is part of the error term .
