After reading Chapters 14 (Distributive Justice) and other
information from the course, respond to the following
questions:
Each of the following patients meets the criteria to receive the
one liver available for transplant.
Who gets the liver?
Why did you choose this way (describe your ethical rationale for
your decision)?
David Flanery: He is a 53-year-old former alcoholic who now
counsels families of alcoholics. He’s also divorced, but he has two
grown children who live in Utah. He does have a DUI conviction from
ten years ago, but he’s gotten sober and on the straight and
narrow. David is in liver failure from cirrhosis.
Michael Casteel: He’s a 62-year-old retired heart surgeon. He’s
been married and divorced twice, but he maintains a good
relationship with his daughter from his first marriage, Sofia, and
with his two granddaughters Maggie and Mathilda. He has a
reputation for being a meticulous surgeon but retired after a
diagnosis of Hepatitis B after a needlestick. He is now in liver
failure.
Jody Hewitt: She’s a 54-year-old school teacher who used to
smoke two packs of cigarettes per day. She’s taking Chantix (it
gives her night terrors, but she’s working on it). She’s known for
her husky voice, her dry wit, and her love of cats. She is in liver
failure from the medications she is taking.
Sarah Martin: She’s a 37-year-old mother of three children who
has never smoked and rarely drinks alcohol. She’s married and works
at Dollar General. She has an associate’s degree. Her husband,
Chris, is a chef at Outback Steakhouse. Sarah is in acute liver
failure from a recent infection.
Steven Morgan: He’s a 23-year-old civil servant and former
Olympic hopeful. He’s grown up with a genetic condition that led to
liver failure, but through personal determination has managed to
graduate high school and was an athlete. His condition has
sidelined him from his training for Olympic swimming, but when he’s
not working for the city, he teaches swimming to inner-city
kids.
