Goal: Calculate pH and pOH for strong acid or strong base solutions (5 pts for each question). (Significant figures for pH and pOH are based on the decimal portion of the concentration. The number of digits in the decimal number will tell you how many digits AFTER the decimal point you will report for the pH and pOH. Digits before the decimal in pH and pOH do not count toward sig figs! Example the pH of a 3.03 x 10-2 M HBr solution is 1.519.) Instructions: Calculate the (1) pH of each of the following solutions, (2) the pOH of each solution, and (3) circle whether the solution is acidic, basic or neutral based on the pH and or pOH. Show your work for each calculation and use proper sig figs. 1. A solution with [H3O+] = 6.3 x 10-4 M. (Don't forget to show work!) pH = pOH = acidic basic neutral
2. A solution with [OH-] = 5.0 x 10-10 M (Don't forget to show work!) pH = pOH = acidic 3. A 0.045 M HCI solution. (Don't forget to show work!) pH = pOH = acidic basic acidic basic 4. A 0.045 M NaOH solution. (Don't forget to show work!) pH = POH basic neutral = neutral neutral
5. A 0.045 M Ba(OH)2 solution. (Be careful with this one and don't forget to show work!) pH = pOH = acidic basic neutral
