27. Answer ALL parts of this question. Edible ethanol, for use in the pharmaceutical industry, is still made by the fermentation of sugars. For example, sucrose will be broken down anaerobically by yeasts to give ethanol according to the below equation: H₂O(1) + C12H22O11(s) → 4 C₂H5OH(1) + 4 CO2(g) Calculate how many moles there are in exactly 1 g of sucrose [Data: RAM values: C 12.01; H 1.01; O 16.00]. (2 marks) (a) (b) If all of this 1 g were to be converted into ethanol, calculate how many moles of CO2(g) would be produced, according to the above. (1 mark) (c) (d) Assume that all of the volume change in the system comes about through the production of gas (in other words, ignore the consumption or production of liquids or solids in the above equation). Calculate the volume change in the system, upon complete fermentation of exactly 1 g of sucrose [Data: p = 101325 Pa; T = 298 K; R = 8.314 J K-¹ mol ¹]. (3 marks) Calculate the value of the work term, w. (4 marks)
