Cavendish bananas were genetically modified (GM) with a genethat confers resistance to the TR4 fungus in 2012. GM banana treesare being grown and tested near the town of Humpty Doo inAustralia’s Northern Territory.
Concerned that cultivars containing the TR4 resistant transgenehave been stolen and are being grown on nearby farms, you have beenhired to test locally grown bananas for the presence of thetransgene. As part of your experiments you isolate DNA fromdifferent plants. You then use two sets of primers to amplify theisolated DNA. The first set of primers (tubulin) amplify asegment of a gene that is found in all plants. The second setof primers (35S) amplify a segment of DNA used as a regulatorysequence for expression of the TR4 resistant transgene. Theresults of your experiments are shown below. Each laneof the gel contains DNA amplified using either the tubulin (todetect plant DNA) or 35S (to detect the presence of the transgene)primers.

1.What is the purpose of including the wild-type and GM bananaas part of the experiment?
2.Are either of the bananas in Test A or Test B geneticallymodified? How did you arrive at your conclusion?
3. The production of TR4-resistant bananas is one argument infavor of GMOs. There are even GM bananas expressing aprecursor for vitamin A production currently being tested as a wayto address vitamin A deficiency that leads to blindness and deathin children around the world. However, there are many who areagainst GMOs. What are two arguments put forthby opponents of GMOs?
