J.C. is a 41-year-old man who comes to the emergency departmentwith acute low back pain. He states that he did some heavy liftingyesterday, went to bed with a mild backache, and awoke this morningwith terrible back pain, which he rates as a ten on a scale of 1 to10. He admits to having had a similar episode of back pain yearsago "after I lifted something heavy at work." J.C. has a medicalhistory of peptic ulcer disease related to nonsteroidalanti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use. He is 6 feet (183 cm) tall andweighs 170 pounds.
