The mycologists thought they would use historical data to confirm their hypothesis of thermal melanism. Since temperatures in the study area increased by about 1 degree C during the study period (1970- 2010), they ran linear regressions of change in temperature vs. change in lightness of the mushrooms. Graph A is for saprophytic fungi (fungi that use decaying organic matter for food). Graph B is for ectomycorrhizal fungi.
