Exercise 5 bone features
This exercise is to help you begin to understand the terminologywe use to identify the general landmarks and features on bones (youwill learn the specific bones of the skeleton and their features ingreat detail in lab 6.) use the skeletal material provided by yourinstructor (or the photos in the lab 5 exercise image library onpg. 131) to complete the following tasks.
1. Examine the cervical vertebra (neck vertebra). Locate thefeatures boldfaced and described below, and write the correspondingletters in the blanks provided on the image on pg. 131.
A. The transverse foramen (one on each side of the vertebra)transmits the vertebral arteries that send blood to the brain.
B. The posterior end of the vertebra has a spinous process towhich muscles and ligaments attach.
C. The foramen posterior to the body of the vertebra creates thevertebral canal for the spinal cord to pass through when thevertebrae are stacked up on one another in the spine.
