Read the article below to answer questions 28-32. Since 1985, the United States has been planning the space station Freedom The $40 billion station, with room for a four-person crew, will orbit 300 miles above the earth. It is scheduled to begin its 30-year orbit some time around the year 2000. Freedom has three main parts: the truss, the solar panels, and the living and lab modules. The 308-foot truss supports the station like a backbone; about the length of a football field, it is a latticework of stiff graphite and plastic tubes. At each end of the truss are three huge solar panels. The space station will need as much electricity as 50 homes, and the panels generate this power from sunlight. At the center of the truss are a residential module and three laboratories. These look a little like giant, interlocking tin cans. The 256-ton station is too big to launch whole. So a space shuttle will have to make 24 separate trips to ferry up the parts. In space, astronauts will assemble it. 28. What structure is the main support of the Freedom? A. the space shuttle B. the solar panels C. the living module D. the truss 29. How many tons will the space station weigh? A. 24 B. 256 C. 300 D. 308 30. What is the purpose of the panels on the truss? Page 7 A. to store supplies B. to perform scientific experiments C. to help guide the space station D. to generate electrical power 31. Freedom has to be assembled in space because A. most of the astronauts are there. B. it is impossible to create weightless conditions on earth. C. it is too big to launch in one piece. D. scientists have computer models that show it is possible. 32. In this article, the author A. describes the space station. B. explains the space shuttle. C. warns about the dangers of the space station. D. entertains with stories about space travel. Go on to the next page
