Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was a scheduled internationalpassenger flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing that lost contactwith air traffic control on March 8th, 2014 at 01:20 MYT, less thanan hour after takeoff. At 07:24, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) reportedthe flight as missing. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, wascarrying 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 14nations A multinational search and rescue effort, later reported asthe largest in history, was initiated in Thailand and the SouthChina Sea. Within a few days, this search was extended to includethe Strait of Malacca and the Andaman Sea. On March 15th, based onmilitary radar data and radio "pings" between the aircraft and anInmarsat satellite, investigators concluded that it had firstheaded west across the Malay Peninsula, then continued on anorthern or southern track for approximately seven hours. Thesearch in the South China Sea was abandoned. Three days later theAustralian Maritime Safety Authority began searching the southernpart of the Indian Ocean. How did flight MH370 vanish? The Boeing777 disappeared from air traffic control screens when itstransponder signal stopped. The last definitive sighting oncivilian radar showed the aircraft flying northeast across the Gulfof Thailand. The final radio message received by air trafficcontrol - "Alright, goodnight" - suggested everything was normal onboard. Military radar shows that the plane then turned and headedwest across Malaysia towards the Andaman Sea. On March 15th,satellite data emerged suggesting the plane could be somewhere onan arc stretching either north up to central Asia, or south to theIndian Ocean and Australia.
Based on what you learned in your sea floor lecture answer thefollowing questions:
1) In which ocean zone do you think the plane is located? 2) What are the characteristics of the seafloor in thatparticular zone? ( 3) If the exact location is found, how willradar technology aid in finding the location of the plane? 4)What role “if any”, ocean microphones played in the inability ofthe Malaysian and Australian navies to identify the area in whichthe airliner crashed?
