Discussion Topic: As we near the end of this course, you have had many opportunities to experience music which might seem very basic as well as music which appears quite complex and well-developed. You have also studied instruments that span the same continuum. As we consider the topics of our final chapters, I'd like you all to give some thought to the relationship between profound musical expression as it relates to the necessity of technological development. In an effort to dispel the myth that one musical system or expression is ever more sophisticated or "better" than another, I'd like you to consider the following questions. 1. How does composition relate to the supernatural world in some Native American cultures? 2. Why is technological progress not always to be equated with cultural progress in terms of music? As you work on this assignment, consider how the questions relate to each other. Do not simply answer each question. It is important for you to broaden your scope and use these questions to propel you towards a deeper understanding of musical expression around the world. As with all of your forums, your initial post is worth up to 10 points. Remember, this is an academic forum, so you must post well- written comments with special attention paid to punctuation, spelling, grammar, and content.
