19.8 Combining Sentences with Prepositional Phrases (Hint: Pages 475-476 go into detail on this!) Instructor's note: If you can correctly identify the prepositional phrases in sentences 2 and 3, you should have no trouble with this section. Remember that prepositional phrases function as either adjectives or adverbs. Directions: Combine the following sentences by cutting the unneeded words at the beginning of the second and third sentences. Reposition the remaining prepositional phrases at the beginning of the first sentence. Remember to use a comma. 1. I witnessed a terrible four-car pileup. The accident was at the intersection. The intersection was of 85th and Metcalf. 2. I watched the hotel under construction rise to completion seemingly overnight. I watched through a hole. The hole was in a wooden fence. 3. A government coalition has finally begun a recovery program for the sandhill crane. It was after ten years. The years were full of heated debate. 4. John Wayne holds a special place. That place is in the hearts of fans. They are fans of the mythic West. 5. A single determined cricket kept Brian awake far into the night. The cricket was outside a bedroom window. The window was on the north side of the house.
