1) Communication Challenges - Your employees are breaking intoethnically based cliques. Members of ethnic groups eat together, socialize together, and often chat in their native languages whilethey work. You appreciate how these groups give their members asense of community, but you worry that these informal communicationchannels are alienating non-members and fragmenting the flow ofinformation. How can you encourage a stronger sense of communityand teamwork across your department? Brainstorm at least threesteps you can take to encourage better cross-culturalcommunication. 2) Practice your skills – Your boss wants to send abrief e-mail message welcoming employees recently transferred toyour department from the company’s Hong Kong branch. Theseemployees, all of whom are Hong Kong natives, speak English, butyour boss asks you to review his message for clarity. What wouldyou suggest you boss change in the following e-mail message, andwhy? Would you consider this message to be audience centered? Whyor why not? (Hint: Do some quick research on Hong Kong to identifythe style of English that people in Hong Kong are likely to speak.)I wanted to welcome you ASAP to our little family here in theStates. It’s high time we shook hands in person and not just acrossthe sea. I’m pleased as punch about getting to know you all, and Ifor one will do my level best to sell you on America.
