As we have seen this week, one of the more controversial issueswith the representation of American Indians is the use of the terms"Indian" and Indian-related names with high school, college, andprofessional sports teams. Especially over the summer andthrough the fall of 2020, this issue has once again been in thespotlight, with several prominent teams either rethinking orchanging their mascots. In your opinion, is this an issuethat needs to be addressed, or is it something that people shouldjust move past and ignore? Do you think these names should bekept to keep the tradition and merchandise relevant today, and/orthat the names actual honor American Indians? If so,how? Conversely, if you feel these names are offensive andneed to be changed, explain why. Also, if "Indian" relatedmascots should be changed, should other racial andethnically-related team names, (such as Notre Dame's "Fightin'Irish") be changed as well?
When completing this assignment, it will be useful to refer tothe reading from the NCAI this week - in particular, the fact thateven if this is an issue that you are unfamiliar with, thatAmerican Indian advocacy groups have been trying to change certainteam names since the 1960's, (and have changed several prominentcollege mascots, such as Stanford, UMass, and even Miami Universityhere in Ohio) so it is not accurate to describe the controversy asa relatively new protest or some type of online outrage. Whether you are for or against this issue, (or even indifferent) itmay be a good idea to do a little research on your own so you canaccurately address this week's questions.
