1. (a) A parallel-faced slab is cut out from a birefringent crystal in a way that its optic axis is parallel to the cut-faces of the slab, as shown in Figure 1. Unpolarized light with a wavelength of 550 nm is incident perpendicular to the parallel faces of the slab. Determine the minimum thickness of the slab (d) to achieve a phase difference of it between the ordinary and extraordinary rays when emerging from the slab. The refractive indices of the crystal for the ordinary ray (no) and extraordinary ray (ne) are 1.545 and 1.551, respectively. (6 Marks) Optic axis ܠܹܗ Incident light d Figure 1
(b) If the resistance of the variable resistor shown in Figure 2 is slowly decreased, what is the direction of the current induced in the small circular loop placed inside the larger loop? If the small circular loop is instead placed outside the large loop and to its right (they are on the same plane and not overlapping), determine the direction of the current induced in the small circular loop as the resistance of the variable resistor is decreased. Explain your answer in detail. (13 Marks) If Figure 2 (c) A clean metal surface is illuminated by a beam of monochromatic light. It is given that no photoelectrons are ejected if the wavelength of the incident light is greater than 300 nm. (i) Determine the work function of this metal in electron-volt. (ii) Find the maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons ejected from this metal when it is illuminated with an incident light with a wavelength of 150 nm. (6 Marks)
