A neurone was suspended in a solution and connected both to an electrical stimulator and an oscilloscope. The intensity of the stimulus was varied and the oscilloscope produced a visual record of the action potentials in the neurone. The diagrams below show (a) the apparatus and a summary of the results of the experiment (b-d). Electrical stimulator Action potentials Stimulus given Intensity of stimulus Neurone in suitable solution Amplifier Oscilloscope ||| Time Scanned with Any Scan (a) What solution would have been used in this experiment and state why this solution required? (2) (b) Suggest a reason why the first three stimuli did not produce action potentials. (1) (c) What conclusion can be drawn about the three action potentials and the intensity of the last three stimuli?(2) (d) Sense organs receive stimuli at different intensities. How do neurones transmit this information?(2) TOTAL 7 MARKS
