A health physicist collects a wipe test from a contaminated work surface and tries to identify the contaminant by beta attenuation and decay measurements. The contaminant is determined to be a pure beta emitter with a half-life of about 5 days. Beta attenuation measurements are made with a GM probe with a 0.1mm thick mica window. It is found that a 1.75mm thick aluminum (density of 2.7 g/cm3) filter stops all of the beta particles. Compute the beta energy and identify the contaminant.
