Find the mass of an empty calorimeter (coffee cup and lid).Then, fill it about 2/3 full of water, having a temperature ofabout 35oC and again, find the mass.
Stirthewaterinthecalorimeterandreadtheinitialtemperature,ofthewater,
to the nearest tenth of a degree.
Takeanicecube,allowittostartmeltingandimmediatelywipetheicewitha
towel. Then, place into the calorimeter without any splashing.Next, put the lid
on the calorimeter as quickly as possible.
Stir rapidly until all the ice is melted and read thetemperature to the nearest
tenth of a degree.
Findthecombinedmassofthecalorimeteranditscontents.
Calculate the latent heat of fusion of ice and compare with thestandard. It
should be noted, the calorimeter itself and the stirring rod areconsidered to be
negligible in this experiment.
Repeat the experiment, only using an aluminum calorimeter.
