QUESTION 2
Tony Fernandes, CEO, AirAsia Group: Interview Interviewer: Whichroadblocks do entrepreneurs face in ASEAN economies, and where aretheir opportunities? Tony Fernandes: There are some countries whereentrepreneurship is difficult because the government ownseverything. The government should create and enable entrepreneursinstead of interfering with their businesses. For example, there ispotential for a huge conflict of interest when you own an airlineor an airport and private entrepreneurs are involved. Allstakeholders have to understand their role in order to compete on aregional and international level. The potential this region holdsis immense in terms of opportunities for the emergence ofburgeoning businesses, especially on the digital front, and is notonly limited to the aviation, travel and tourism industries. If all10 member countries combine to form a single market and productionbase, this will create a community of over 700m to tap into. ASEANcan provide a much bigger platform and a much larger stage on whichbusinesses can be noticed and grow. Interviewer: Is the dominanceof legacy, family-run conglomerates in many ASEAN marketsrestricting space for start-ups and young entrepreneurs toflourish? Tony Fernandes: The dominance of family-run conglomeratesthat monopolise the market signifies that there is competition –especially for start-ups to flourish. From my perspective, competition is what helps people, businesses, industries and, ultimately, economies grow. I have been an advocate of faircompetition, simply because it makes us better. There have beenvarious examples where the monopoly of an industry has had adetrimental effect, simply because the leading corporation does notcare about its customers, but the customers simply have no otheroption. I believe that healthy competition is the way forward forstart-ups to grow into new national and regional champions as longas they respect their competitors. Interviewer: What is thecorrelation between the expansion of the aviation industry and thegrowth of entrepreneurship in secondary and tertiary cities inASEAN? Tony Fernandes: The importance of aviation in a globalisedworld is beyond question, and macro-urban planning shouldprioritise the construction of airports. Job creation, increasedtourism and economic development are all spill-over effects of aglobal aviation hub. With a city-state attached, this would also bea catalyst for the future economic competitiveness of any secondaryand tertiary cities within ASEAN. Developments such as highways, tourist attractions and landmarks, rail links, and modern utilitieswill be required to meet increased demand, and this translates towidespread job creation. The potential within ASEAN countries fornew hubs is great. Standout examples are the Philippines, withinternational airports in Clark and Manila, and Thailand’s airportsin Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi and U-Tapao.
