Business Situation: Rational Unified Process (RUP)Joe Brown, the president of Roanoke Manufacturing, requested thatJack Jones, the MIS department manager, investigate the viabilityof selling their products over the Web. Currently, the MISdepartment is still using an IBM mainframe as their primarydeployment environment. As a first step, Jack contacted his friendsat IBM to see if they had any suggestions as to how RoanokeManufacturing could move toward supporting sales in an electroniccommerce environment while keeping their mainframe as their mainsystem. His friends explained that IBM (www.ibm.com) now supportsJava and Linux on their mainframes. Jack has also learned that IBMowns Rational (www-01.ibm. com/software/rational/), the creator ofthe UML and the Unified Process. Jack’s friends suggested that Jackinvestigate using object-oriented systems as a basis for developingthe new system. They also suggested that using the Rational UnifiedProcess (RUP), Java, and virtual Linux machines on his currentmainframe as a way to support the move toward a distributedelectronic commerce system would protect his current investment inhis legacy systems while allowing the new system to be developed ina more modern manner. Even though Jack’s IBM friends were verypersuasive, Jack is still a little wary about moving his operationfrom a structured systems approach to this new object-orientedapproach. Use the following figure to select the right approach anduse the right unified processes.Unified ProcessQ1. Describe the unified business process that must be consideredby Jack in Implementation phase.
