For this discussion, think about your immediate manager at thecompany where you currently work. (If you are not currentlyworking, focus on a manager you worked for in the past.) In eithercase, the organization can be a for-profit or non-profitorganization. Then answer the questions below. A solid paragraphfor each question should be sufficient.
1. Start by describing the organization and your manager, providing enough information to communicate a sense of the workenvironment and your manager's role in it
2. Identify among the management viewpoints discussed inChapter 2 the one (or two) that align most closely with howyour manager leads and manages. Provide two examples thatinvolve his/her interaction with employees that illustrate yourchoice.
3. Consider the three principle managerial skillsdescribed in Chapter 1 (Reminder: Technical skills (jobspecific knowledge); Conceptual skills (ability to thinkanalytically); and Human or “people” skills. At which of the threeskills does your manager excel? Which of those skills do you thinkare less strong? Can you provide examples?
4. Summarize the results of your “Are You Working for aLearning Organization” assessment. What, specifically, does yourmanager do --or not do -- that creates and transfers knowledge inyour work group? Can you provide an example of an initiative he/shehas taken to modify behavior reflecting new knowledge that has beenintroduced? (See Chapter 2, section 2.7 for a definition ofLearning Organization characteristics).
5. What is a takeaway from your own “How strong is My Motivationto Lead” assessment? Which of the three skills described inquestion b) above do you think is most likely to affect your futuresuccess as a leader and what might you do now to develop it?
