2. In a three-point bend test on a mild steel sample the load at the point of crack growth and the final crack length were noted as 70 kN and 26 mm respectively. At the point of crack growth the area under the load-deflection graph was 32.6 J. If the specimen width (W) and thickness (B) are 49.98 mm and 25.05 mm respectively. (i) Calculate the fracture toughness of the mild steel. (ii) If a crack opening displacement (C.O.D) gauge (Width z = 2.5 mm) is attached to this specimen calculate the plastic component of the gauge reading which you would have expected to record. For the mild steel, oy = 240 MPa, E = 207 GPa, and v = 0.3.
