Objective is to apply the concepts of sequential logic and memory devices in digital systems. A shift register is a device that inputs data loaded serially into a basic memory unit and then shifts this information to a storage element, thus allows for additional input data. Figure 1(a) and 1(b) below shows a JK flip-flop and JK flip-flop with preset and clear, respectively. Using either one of the JK flip-flops, apply the concepts of sequential logic and construct a 4-bit shift register. This shift register would be used as a memory element. The shift register can be either serial-in / serial- out (SISO), serial-in / parallel-out (SIPO), parallel-in / serial-out (PISO) or parallel-in / parallel-out (PIPO).
