A 1:1 ratio is considered normal. When the patient has been fluid restricted the urine to serum osmo ratio is more likely 3:1. Does your patient have a normal urine osmolality? If your patient's serum osmolality is 275 mOsm/kg (reference range 275-300), what is the ratio of urine to serum for your patient? Does this ratio suggest that the patient has had fluid restriction? Why or why not? If ADH is injected into the patient what ratio of urine to serum is expected? What part of the renal anatomy may be malfunctioning?
