As you have learned, protein is found in plant-based and
animal-based food sources.
Some individuals opt for a plant-based eating pattern and avoid
all animal sources of protein entirely. There are many reasons why
an individual chooses a vegetarian eating style, as well, there are
many types of vegetarian lifestyles including vegan, lacto-ovo, and
flexitarian to name a few.
Let's take a look at one reason individuals may elect to follow
a vegetarian eating pattern. Cost is often a factor in our food
selection choices. Let's compare the cost per gram for animal and
plant protein.
Select two of the sources of animal protein listed below and
calculate the cost per gram of protein. This means you will need to
determine the price for the product at the grocery store and the
amount of protein provided. Next divide the price by the grams of
protein in the product. This will provide you with the cost per
gram of protein. Please show your
work.
Example: Jif peanut butter is $5.99 for a 40oz jar.
There are 7g protein per serving. There are 34 servings in the 40oz
jar.
34 servings x 7g = 238g protein. This is the total
amount of protein purchased for $5.99.
$5.99/238g = $0.02 per gram of protein.
Chicken breast
Ground beef
Pork chop
Salmon
Egg
Now calculate the cost per gram of protein for two of the
following plant sources of protein. Please show
your work.
Black beans
Peanut butter
Almonds
Tofu
Edamame
Lentils
Lastly, compare and contrast the economic value of each source
of protein. Review the posts submitted by others and discuss what
you take forward with you from this activity. Respond to a minimum
