How does HEDP (1-Hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid) workas a chelating agent. Do the cationic metal ions kick off thehydrogens on the OH groups to complex or does the structure need toundergo hydroylsis first in basic conditions and then metal agentscomplex with the O- groups? Would this mean they only work underalkaline conditions?
Hoping to have clarity on the mechanism which makes phosphonicacids chelating agents. Structure is below
0= HO- НО—Р. CH3 0 P—ОН ОН ОН ОН
