When an alcohol containing compound and a thiol containing compound are subjected to hydration conditions both reactions give a pair of cyclic and aliphatic products. Interestingly, when the thiol compound is reacted with HCI/H₂O a greater yield of the cyclic products are obtained in comparison to when the alcohol compound is reacted with HCI/H₂S. Furthermore, more aliphatic products are obtained from the hydrate reaction upon the alcohol compound than the thiol compound. In the space provided, give a chemical rationale as to why this is.
