= Problem 10. An electron near the surface of the earth is in an evacuated region of space where the electric field is E (3 × 105 N/C) î and the magnetic field is zero. The magnitude of this electric field is about ten times less than the electric field that leads to a spark when you scuff your shoes across a carpet and bring your hand close to a metal door handle that is, this electric field is relatively small. A) Find the electromagnetic force on the electron. B) Find the gravitational force on the electron. (Let the ŷ direction be away from the surface of the earth.) C) Find the acceleration of the electron neglecting the gravitational force on the electron. Problem 11. Consider two electrons that are separated by a distance r. Find the ratio of the size of the gravitational force to the size of the electrostatic force that the electrons exert on each other.
