During a holiday, a 8-year-old boy sets up a birch crisis in his
room. When he wakes up one morning
during the Easter holidays he has a runny nose and red/watery eyes
and generally feels unwell. Since
he's mother is allergic to pollen, she suspects that her son has
also developed allergies. They
visit a health center where the boy can do a spot test that shows a
reaction to birch pollen and
mugwort. He gets prescriptions for tablets with antihistamines, as
well as cortisone and chromoglycate-containing
nasal spray and chromoglycate as eye drops. The family visits the
pharmacy.
a) Describe the mechanisms of action of the medicines that the
little boy was prescribed (antihistamines,
cortisone and chromoglycate).
b) What is the difference between this type of allergic reaction
and contact allergy to e.g. nickel what
does the immunological reaction apply?
c) Discuss appropriate self-care/over the counter advice to
reduce the risk of allergy attacks.
