1. A patient being treated for HIV comes to the office for a follow-up visit. The patient tested positive for the infection several months ago but has had no real symptoms up to this time. At the last visit, the physician prescribed a “cocktail” of several antiretroviral drugs. When asked about his compliance with the drug regimen, the patient replies that he has stopped taking the drugs, because he does not feel bad and does not think he needs the drugs. How would you explain to the patient the importance of taking the prescribed medication?
