American Politics Current EventsPaper
Students will find a current (withinthe last 3 months) controversial issue in AmericanNational politics or California politics. The paper will describethe issue, discuss both/all sides of the issues, and provide thestudent's position on the issue. The paper should be writtenas an unbiased report, think of me as an elected official and Ineed to come up with a position on the issue. I assign you toresearch and develop a position on the issue. You will want to makesure that I know the opposing sides’ best arguments so I can defendthe position taken in the paper. Three outside sources are requiredfor this assignment, encyclopedias and dictionaries do not count assources.
Topics that are excluded for thissemester: COVID, Russia/Ukraine, January 6th eventsand homelessness, see below for more detail onabortion and gun control.

For the current event each student will find a contemporarycontroversial issue in American or California politics. Theissue must be within the last 3 months. The paper will describe theissue, discuss both/all sides of the issues, and provide thestudent's opinion of the issue.
Think of me as a politician that has to come up with a stance onthe current event that you have chosen. You are on my staff and Iassign you the topic and tell you to research the topic. You mustprovide me the issue, why it is important, what are the bestarguments on both sides and then why I should support the side yousupport. You may assume I support the same political ideology thatyou support.
