Q2) The investment casting process has been around in one form or another for thousands of years. In the early 1990's its was revolutionized when the first Additive Manufacturing system was adapted for it. This has been considered a breakthrough to revitalize investment casting process as a feasible manufacturing technique with the introduction of additive manufacturing. As a manufacturing engineer you are required to fabricate low and limited number (a few hundred pieces) of the components shown in FIGURE Q2 using investment casting. FIGURE Q2: Components made from Investment Casting Process a. Justify how additive manufacturing technology support and revitalize investment casting process. b. As a manufacturing engineer you are required to propose a cheaper alternative method of manufacturing the patterns (prototypes) for investment casting. Based on engineering fundamentals propose which additive manufacturing system is most optimal to fabricate the patterns for investment casting? c. Illustrate with sketches what are the various steps involved in the additive manufacturing system you choose in Q2 part (b). d. Provide what are the range of materials available in the additive manufacturing system you selected in Q2 part (b). e. What material would be the best option for fabricating the patterns for investment casting. Justify your choice of material based on its properties. f. Other than able to make patterns for casting process, compare what are the general advantages and disadvantages of the additive manufacturing you selected for Q2 part (b).
