Question 1 (20 Marks) A thermo gate consists of a 6061-T6-aluminum plate AB and an Am-1004-T61- magnesium plate CD, as shown in Figure Q1, each having a width of 15mm and cantilevered at A and D. The ambient temperature is T, = 25°C and the temperature required to just close the gap between the two plates is T₂ = 85.48°C. The 6061-T6- aluminum plate has a Young's modulus of 68.9 GPa with coefficient of thermal expansion of 24×10/°C. The Am-1004-T61-magnesium plate has a Young's modulus of 44.7 GPa with coefficient of thermal expansion of 26×10/°C. Given the dimensions shown in Figure Q1 and assuming bending or buckling will not occur; (a) Determine the gap between the two plates at ambient temperature. (4 marks) (b) Determine the axial force in each plate if the temperature becomes 7₂ = 100°C. (7 marks) (c) Calculate the change in length of 6061-T6-aluminum plate. (2 marks) (d) Determine the maximum design temperature with a factor of safety of 1.3? (7 marks) 10mm 600mm Aluminum Oy = 255MPa gap BC 10mm 400mm Magnesium Oy = 152MPa D
