2. A hollow shaft, machined from AISI C1040, normalized steel, is used to transmit an almost constant power of 150 hp at a speed that fluctuates continuously from 200 rpm to 600 rpm. Take d = 0.50 for the hollow shaft. Use a Soderberg factor of safety of 1.80. Fatigue strength is affected by a hardened profile keyway. a) Recommend the shaft diameter considering a machined surface. Design for an indefinite life.
