27. A slender strut of uniform section and of length L has pin-jointed ends and it is initially straight and vertical. It carries an axial load P and also a horizontal lateral load W applied at the middle of its length and acting in the plane in which P would cause bending to occur. Show that the maximum deflection is W mL WL P. Δ tan where mº 2m P 2 4P EI In the case of a given strut the magnitude of P is Pc/4, where P, is the Euler critical load for the strut. Find the ratio of the maximum deflection produced by P and the lateral load W acting together, to that produced by W acting alonc. (U. Lond.) (Ans.: 1.328)
