A 42-year old female present at her GP with chronic gastro-oesophageal reflux and heart-burn. She is referred to the endoscopy unit at the local hospital. On endoscopy, changes to the oesophageal mucosa were noted. The area was biopsied and sent to the histopathology laboratory for examination. The normal epithelium of the oesophagus was seen to be replaced with glandular epithelium. This metaplastic changes was caused by changes in pH, causing the epithelium to adapt to the stimulus.
