1 EXPLORATION Exercise 3 Charles' Law In this experiment you will test the relationship between temperature and volume of a gas. EXPERIMENTATION 3 Put on goggles and gloves. 2 Gather the following materials: thermometer, 50 mL graduated cylinder, 250 mL beaker, the three culture tubes, test tube clamp, volumetric flask, burner fuel, burner stand, aluminum pie plate, and a 2 oz aluminum cap. Add approximately 200 mL of tap water to the 250 mL beaker. 4 Assemble the burner setup using the following steps. See Figure 13. OH 2015 Science Interactive All Rights reserved. Figure 13. Beaker on top of stand over an open flame. EVALUATION - 5 Place an aluminum pie plate on a solid work surface away from flammable objects. 6 Set the burner stand towards the back of the ple plate.
II Place the beaker on top of the burner stand. 8 Uncap the burner fuel and set cap aside. Place the burner fuel on the ple plate just in front of the stand. 9 Use matches or a lighter to ignite the fuel. BE CAREFUL: the flame may be nearly invisible. 10 Gently slide the fuel under the stand without disturbing the beaker. 11 The 2 oz. aluminum cup will be placed over the fuel to extinguish the flame. Set the aluminum cup next to the burner setup so you are ready to extinguish the flame at any point. Allow the water to boil for 3-5 minutes. 7 12 13 Place the 12x75 mm polystyrene non-sterile test tube (open-side up) in the boiling water, holding it with test tube clamps. 14 Place the thermometer inside the tube. See Figure 14. 02015 Science interactive All Rights reserved Figure 14, Culture tube held by test tube tongs in the water bath with thermometer inside the culture tube.

Do not touch the beaker or metal stand as they will be extremely hot. See Figure 15. 02015 Science Interactive All Rights reserved Figure 15. Aluminum cap used to extinguish the flame. 20 Gather and fill a large pot half-full of room tr +
perimentation/287202/exercise/69779 ii 20 Gather and fill a large pot half-full of room-temperature tap water. Note: The pot must be deep enough to freely rotate the culture tube when filled about halfway with water. 21 Submerge the capped test tube in the room-temperature water bath, keeping the cap over the opening. 22 Allow the tube to remain submerged for 2-3 minutes to allow the gas to equilibrate to the room temperature bath. 23 Use the thermometer to take the temperature of the water bath while you wait. 24 Record this temperature as "Temperature of gas at room temperature (°C)" in Data Table 3. Note: After allowing the submerged test tube to equilibrate, the water temperature is the same as the temperature of the gas inside the test tube. 25 Carefully invert the tube so the opening is facing downward in the water bath, then remove the cap, allowing the water to enter the tube. 26 Once the temperature equilibrates and no more water is entering the test tube, move the tube so that the level of the water in the vessel is the same as the level of the water in the pot. See Figure 16. 2015 Science Interactive All Rights reserved
02015 Science Interactive. All Rights reserved Figure 16. Inverted culture tube in water bath. The water level inside the culture tube is at the same level as the water in the pot. 27 Affix the cap to the test tube and remove the tube from the water bath. 28 Measure the volume of water in the test tube (V₁) by carefully pouring it into the graduated cylinder. 29 Record the volume of water in Data Table 3. 30 Fill the test tube with room temperature water. 31 Measure the volume of the full tube (V₂) by carefully pouring the water into the graduated cylinder. Note: The volume of water at room temperature is the volume of the gas at the boiling temperature. 32 Record the volume in Data Table 3. 33 Calculate the volume of gas at room temperature (V₂) using the following equation: V₁ = V₂-V₁ 34 Repeat steps 7-33 for the 25.0 mL volumetric flask and record data in Data Table 4. 35 Repeat steps 7-33 for the sterile, individually wrapped culture tube (12x75 mm) and record the data in Data Table 5. 36 Repeat steps 7-33 for the sterile, individually wrapped culture tube (17x100 mm) and record the data in Data Table 6. Clean up • Wash all materials with soap and water. • Allow the materials to dry. Return all equipment to the lab kit for future.
