Point Charge Image Problem
In Example 3.2 Griffiths (3rd Edition) shows how to use the method
of images to solve for a point
charge located outside a spherical conductor. Now imagine that in a
grounded block of conducting
material there is a spherical cavity of radius R. A point charge q
is placed in the conductor a distance
r from the center of the cavity where r < R. Show how to find
the following,
(a) The sign and magnitude of the image charge.
(b) The position of the image charge.
(c) The potential everywhere within the sphere.
(d) The force on the charge within the cavity.
Hint: This problem is so similar to the example we worked in class
that it should be pretty easy. The
results of the calculation with a charge placed outside a spherical
conductor are given in Example 3.2
in the book.
(b) The position of the image charge.
(c) The potential everywhere within the sphere.
(d) The force on the charge within the cavity
