Hello, I recently did the Friedel-Crafts lab where I used
ferrocene and acetic anhydride to make acetylferrocene. I did not
actually may any acetylerrocene because my Rf value for my product
was 0.65 and for ferrocene 0.69 and they also appeared to be the
same yellow color. My percent yield for the crude product is 14%
and for the final product 41%, but what does this mean since I know
I did not make any acetylferrocene? I am trying to figure out what
could have went wrong? If water entered the tube during boiling to
dissolve the ferrocene could that have hydrolyzed the acetic
anhydride? So there would not be any reaction? If the measurements
were not accurate of ferrocene and acetic anhydride could that have
caused no formation of acetylferrocene?
