Consider a type T thermocouple is used to measure the
temperature in a freezer. The true temperature in the freezer is
-150◦C and the reference junction is placed in an ice bath that is
expected to have a temperature of 0◦C.
(a) Based on the given information, what emf would you
expect to measure at the thermocouple output?
(b) If it turns out the ice bath actually has a temperature
of 6◦C, what emf would you actually measure?
(c) Assuming you still thought that the ice bath had a
temperature of 0◦C (even though it was actually 6◦C), how much
error would you have in your resulting freezer temperature
estimate?
(d) Would you classify the error in your estimate as a bias
error or a precision error? Explain.
