Example-15 : (Analysis) : A doubly reinforced beam size 250 mm x 500 mm overall is reinforced with 3 Nos - 16 mm diameter bars as compression reinforcement and 4 nos - 20 mm diameter bars as tensile reinforcement. The effective cover for tensile and compressive steel are 50 mm and 40 mm respectively. Calculate moment of resistance of the beam. Also find superimposed load the beam can carry, if it is simply supported over an effective span of 5 m. Use M-25 concrete and Fe-415 steel. (May 2013) Solution :
