. Fig. 3a shows a 10-meter profile of the soil strata and
groundwater table before the groundwater has risen. After several
years later, the water level has risen by 2 meters above ground
level, as shown in Fig. 3b. Given: the total density of the sand
above the ground water level is 1.8 Mg/m3 and that below the ground
water is 1.9 Mg/m3 . The total density of the clay is 2.2 Mg/m3 .

(1) Calculate and make a scaled plot using graph paper of the
total vertical stress, effective vertical stress and pore water
pressure versus the elevation for Fig. 3a.
(2) Calculate and make a scaled plot of the total vertical
stress, effective vertical stress and pore water pressure versus
the elevation for Fig. 3b.
3) Discuss what will happen to the ground if the groundwater was
lowered instead.
