1. When ammonia is added to a solution of a cadmium salt in water, the following equilibrium is established. [Cd (H20)62+] (aq) + 2NH3 (aq) = [Cd(H20)4(NH3)2]2+ (aq) + 2H20 (1) If, at 298 K, the concentrations of [Cd (H20)62+] (aq), NH3 (aq) and [Cd(H2O)4(NH3)2]2+ (aq) are 3.8, 7.9 and 21.2 mmol dm-3 respectively, calculate the value of the equilibrium constant at this temperature. 2. The equilibrium constant for the conversion of fructose-1,6-biphosphate (FBP) into glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (GAP) and dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) is K = 1.44 x 10-4. This is step four of the glycolytic pathway and is catalyzed by aldolase. The following concentrations were measured in a cell: [DHAP] = 1.0 x 10-4M, (GAP) = 0.2 x 10-4 Mand (FBP] = 0.5 x 10-5 M. Is the forward reaction favoured at this sampling time? 3. At 37 °C, conversion of glutamate to the amino acid glutamine proceeds as follows. glutamate + NH4+ = glutamine AG° = +15.69 kJ mol-1 (i) (ii) Do products or reactants dominate under these conditions? Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant, K.
