A new mall is considering the number of employees on duty at the
information desk, currently only one employee is employed. Based on
the information obtained, it is known that customers will come to
the information desk with an average of 10 people per hour. It
takes an average of 3 minutes to answer the questions. It is
assumed that customer arrival rates follow a Poisson distribution
and service times follow an exponential distribution. Assume that
the employee at the information desk earns RM 50,000 per hour. The
waiting time fee, if the customer is dissatisfied, is
RM 60,000 per hour of the time spent in the queue.
a. Determine the average number of people waiting in the
system.
b. Determine the expected time a customer spends in the
system.
c. Calculate the expected cost of 8 hours/day for an
employee.
d. The mall management has decided to consider using two employees
at the information desk. Suggest to mall management whether to use
one or two employees at the information desk. Justify your
answer.
