You want to reduce MnO in a tube furnace at 1000°C, and under a partial oxygen pressure (Poz) of 10-30 atm. Use the attached Ellingham Diagram to answer the following questions: a) Is the reduction reaction of MnO thermodynamically possible? Motivate with numerical values. [4] b) You can either use a SiO2 or a Mgo crucible to contain the charge. Which of these crucibles would you use to contain the charge? Motivate with numerical values. [6] c) Indicate on the Ellingham Diagram what the minimum CO/CO2 ratio would be if CO is used as the reductant. [2] d) Calculate the equilibrium constant for the reduction reaction of Mno with CO at 1000°C. [4] e) Is it possible to reduce MnO at 1000°C in a gas mixture with a H2/H20 ratio of 10? Answer this question by calculating AG. [4]
